Description:
|
Giovanni di Marco was called "dal Ponte" because his workshop was located in the Florentine parish of Santo Stefano al Ponte. The cusps at top depict the Descent into Limbo at center, flanked by the Annunciation. The saints are Francis, John the Baptist, Ivo and Dominic. The musical angels at the Virgin's feet are an accurate representation of a musical ensemble of the time. The musical instruments, from left; a portative organ, hogshead psaltery, lute, and harp. They are rendered with accurate detail contemporary to ca. 1430. (Source: Galleria dell'Accademia (Florence) [website]; http://www.accademia.org/)
