Description:
|
The fresco fragment is from the major chapel of the Church of the Badia Fiorentina, which sources record was decorated by Giotto (or his workshop). In all probability it belongs to a scene portraying Joachim and the Shepherds. The figure of the shepherd is attributed to Giotto's own hand. The frescoes were uncovered in 1958; the detached fragment was transferred to a metal frame. The remaining fragments were badly damaged in previous attempts to remove them in 1625-1627 when the church was remodeled. The dating of ca. 1320 is based on stylistic comparison and places the work in between the Peruzzi Chapel and the Bardi Chapel frescoes.
