Description:
|
The provenance of the painting is unknown. The Latin words "In ulnis matris/ manet hic sapientia/ patris" are inscribed on the scroll held by the Christ Child. The painting is a late work of the Saint Cecilia Master, a contemporary of Giotto, who may have collaborated with Giotto on the fresco cycle, Life of Saint Francis, in the upper church of St. Francis of Assisi. The painter's name comes from identification with a dossal in the Uffizi Gallery depicting Saint Cecilia. (Source: Galleria dell'Accademia (Florence) [website]; http://www.accademia.org/)
