Description:
|
Franciabigio's frescoes are the fourth and fifth narrative units in the life of the Baptist, occupying the left two spaces on the east wall, although they were not painted in chronological order. Andrea Del Sarto, commissioned with the series, left for France in 1518-1519, at which time Franciabigio was called in to continue the work. He executed the four atticae and entablature on the whole of the east wall and the first two narrative scenes on that wall, including this one. He may, however, have followed preexisting designs from Del Sarto for these.
