Description:
|
Flanking the doors on the short walls are the four Virtues (Charity, Hope, Justice and Faith). These help divide the space for the twelve narrative scenes, four each on the long walls and two on the short walls, one on either side of the Virtues. Charity is shown as surrounded by three babies. This was painted fairly early in the project; the other 3 allegories were painted in the final three years. They are painted in illusionary niches, almost as trompe l'oeil sculpture.
