Description:
|
This is the last of three versions of the Last Supper which Ghirlandaio painting in refectories in Florence; the other versions are in the Convent of the Ognissanti (1480) and the Badia di Passignano (1476). They are very similar and are indebted to the version Andrea del Castagno painted 30 years earlier in the refectory of Sant'Apollonia. The apostles sit in a shallow U-shaped setting, with only the two flanking apostles sitting at a 90 degree angle with the others. John the Apostle at Christ's left has fallen to sleep. Judas sits apart on the near side of the table. Unlike Castagno, Ghirlandaio opened his composition to a view of the outdoors with an orchards with birds. He also integrated the real architecture with the illusionary space. This use of space became a hallmark of his mature style. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
