Description:
|
Charles I (21 March 1227-7 January 1285), known also as Charles of Anjou, was the King of Sicily by conquest from 1266 with his capital at Naples (and for this he is usually titled King of Naples after 1282, as are his successors). Arnolfo di Cambio moved from Florence to Rome in 1277, in the service of Charles I, and was also commissioned to build a fountain for him in Perugia. The statue comes from Rome, Palazzo Senatorio; it may possibly have been made in connection with Charles’s renewed appointment as Roman senator in 1281.
