Description:
The name by which he is known is derived from his father’s occupation as a gardener (It. ortolano); Ortolano began his career in Ferrara around 1500. Probably as a result of a journey to Venice with Garofalo (1508), he introduced warmer colors and a greater emphasis on naturalism into his painting. The Madonna della Misericordia (Madonna of Mercy) showing a group of people sheltering for protection under the outspread cloak, or pallium of the Virgin Mary, was especially popular in Italy from the 13th to 16th centuries. This panel is in the sacristy of the church. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
