Description:
|
The Chapel of Filippo Strozzi is located in the east (right) transept between the Bardi Chapel and the Tornabuoni (or Maggiore) Chapel. The series of frescoes by Filippino Lippi depict the lives of Saints Philip the Apostle and John the Evangelist and were completed in 1502. These scenes, enriched with exuberant ornament, much of it derived from antiquity, culminate on the altar wall with a tour de force of illusionistic architecture: a Classical triumphal arch, painted in grisaille with touches of color, surrounding the arched recess that holds Filippo Strozzi’s basanite tomb (1491-1495), with angels and Virgin and Child above by Benedetto da Maiano.
