Description:
|
The sitter has been identified as Duchess Gerolama Santacroce, wife of Michelangelo Conti, Duke of Poli. The picture was probably painted shortly after their wedding. The duchess is shown in a dressing gown at her toilet, but items have been included to allude to the Flemish theme of Vanitas. The mirror, pearls and extinguished candle point to the transience of beauty, youth and wealth. (Source: Museo di Roma (Palazzo Braschi) [website]; http://en.museodiroma.it/)
