Description:

Only a short period of time separates the St. George from the first sculptures executed by Donatello for the Campanile of Florence Cathedral. As a group of figures, the depiction of the sacrifice of Isaac is an exception among the sculptures on the Campanile, which were restricted to narrow niches. The salvation of Isaac is indicated by Donatello in the rotation of Abraham's head as he turns away from the actual process of sacrifice. For the sake of speed some of the series was carved in collaboration with other sculptors, here probably Nanni di Bartolo. The original statue is now in the museum and has been replaced on the Campanile with a copy. (Source: Web Gallery of Art; http://www.wga.hu/index.html)
