Description:
|
Luca is celebrated as the inventor of tin-glazed terracotta, of which the first documented sculpture dates from 1441. In this technique the terracotta is covered with vitreous glazes (blue and white or polychrome). The intense colors and the luminosity of the glazes enhance the expressive effects of the sculptural forms as well as the symbolic meaning of the images, and the glazes also protect the surface. The larger works were done in sections. This lunette features all the major Domincan saints. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
