Description:
|
At this period lay brothers were assumed to be untutored in Latin and would not have undergone even the minimal theological preparation required for ordination. Accordingly, the frescoes in their cells, on the south side of the north corridor, do not have mystical or Dominican allusions but are fully narrative illustrations of various scenes from the Life of Christ, drawn mostly from the Passion cycle beginning with the Last Supper [Institution of the Eucharist] (Cell 35) and ending with the Noli me tangere (Cell 1). This fresco has been ascribed to Benozzo Gozzoli, working to the design of Fra Angelico. As in Cell 35, Judas is shown with a dark halo. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
