Description:
|
As early as the 13th century the Constitution of the Order of Preachers stipulated that dormitories were to be decorated with an image of the Virgin in the corridor and that the cells were to contain images of Christ or the Virgin. It is thought that the Dominicans were the first order to specify the use of images in this context, though apart from those at San Marco no other such suites are known. This is from one of the cells in the north corridor, assigned to the lay brothers. This fresco shows Dominic in the prostrate attitude of the prayer of penitence, the second method of praying laid out in the De modo orandi.
