Description:

In addition to Fra Angelico and Antonino Pierozzi (later, St. Antoninus), San Marco was the home of the friar Girolamo Savonarola. Having become prior of the convent, Savonarola unleashed a fierce campaign against the Florentines’ morals and their ostentation of luxury. He was to fall foul of the court of Pope Alexander VI Borgia and ended his life burnt at the stake in front of the Palazzo della Signoria in 1498. As Vasari reported, Fra Bartolommeo was an ardent follower of Savonarola and was in the convent of San Marco on the night of Savonarola’s arrest on 8 April 1498. By the end of 1501 Fra Bartolommeo was a member of San Marco’s congregation. His lasting devotion to Savonarola is proved by his posthumous portrait of him; its original inscription identifies the preacher as a prophet.
