Description:
From the Augustinian church of Santa Maria della Misericordia (the Zambeccari chapel). St. Augustine (at right) has the visions of the Nativity, of the Madonna nursing, and Jesus on the cross, all set in an ideal landscape. Probably a predella painting. The precision of modeling in the figures, a surface almost like enamel, and Francia’s use of oil paint, which is noted by Vasari, suggests an awareness of northern painting.
