Description:
|
Joos was a South Netherlandish painter, also active in Italy. It is generally accepted that he worked at Urbino, where early sources mention a Netherlandish painter, Giusto da Guanto (Justus of Ghent), who was responsible for the altarpiece of the Communion of the Apostles (Urbino, Pal. Ducale) of 1473-1474. The influence of van der Goes (a known associate of Joos) in this work reinforces the identification of Joos van Wassenhove with Justus of Ghent. Federico da Montefeltro gave him the commission for the Communion of the Apostles painted for the brotherhood of the Corpus Domini in Urbino. Among the onlookers on the right of the painting is a portrait of Federico. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
