Description:
The painting depicting the Madonna enthroned with Saints was painted for the church of San Giusto le Mura, Florence; the church was destroyed in 1529. The work was influenced by the Pistoia Cathedral altarpiece, which was commissioned from Verrocchio between 1474 and 1479 but remained unfinished in 1485. The Sacra Conversazione (holy conversation) format was extremely popular at this time, where different saints could be combined to reflect the donor or order of the church or patron saint of a town. The carpet up the steps and the vase of flowers reflect Flemish influences. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
