Description:
|
Ubald of Gubbio (ca. 1084-1160) was a medieval bishop of Gubbio, in Umbria, today venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church. Saint Ubaldo Day is still celebrated at the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo in Gubbio in his honor. This banner would have been carried in celebration of his name day. The devotional act of carrying the banner in procession was believed to be a holy act of worship. The two sided banner is kept in an elaborate glassed and gilded case. On the other side is a Madonna of Mercy (Madonna della Misericordia). (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)
