Description: 
Palagi’s more lyrical, sentimental style was allied to the Bolognese school and to such artists as Guido Reni. While in Rome (1806-1815) he was influenced by the work of Ingres. His early academic style, with its tendency towards Neo-classical subjects and formulae, is exemplified by paintings such as this one. In 1813-1815 he frescoed a room, the Galleria di Teseo, in the Palazzo Torlonia (destroyed 1888) with the assistance of Francesco Hayez with scenes from the life of Theseus; this painting is a study for one of the scenes.
