Description:
|
In 1525-1528 Pontormo painted the most important ensemble of his maturity, the decoration of the Capponi Chapel in S Felìcita, Florence (in situ). The altarpiece shows the Lamentation; in the pendentives of the dome are tondi of St John the Evangelist, St Matthew, St Luke, and St Mark, and on the side wall is a fresco of the Annunciation. As with the Lamentation, there is no emphasis on identifying the saints with their usual attributes. Except for the painting of St John by Pontormo, the precise authorship of the other three portraits has been debated; two or more may have been done by Bronzino, the apprentice to Pontormo.
