Description:
|
It is the only surviving autograph fragment of the original decoration of the Garganelli chapel in San Pietro, Bologna, initiated by Cossa and completed after his death, by Ercole de' Roberti (in 1482-1486); the complex was almost totally destroyed during the reconstruction of the cathedral, begun in 1605. Recovered in 1943 in the Casa Boschi and purchased by the Pinacoteca Nazionale in 1958, the fragment was part of the dramatic Crucifixion. (It is possible to reconstruct the original decoration of the chapel from copies, drawings and descriptions.) (Source: Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna; http://www.pinacotecabologna.beniculturali.it/)
