Description:
|
The painting was commissioned by the Confraternità della Trinità dei Pellegrini of Cortona and shows a compact, tightly constructed composition. The Virgin and Child represent the central axis around which the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and Saints Augustine and Athanasius are grouped. An archaizing element is the glory of cherubim surrounding the symbolic apparition of the crucified Christ and God the Almighty. (Source: Web Gallery of Art; http://www.wga.hu/index.html)
