Description:

Tintoretto’s career ended on a note of triumph. After Veronese’s death in 1588, he finally gained the coveted commission for the painting of the Paradise (1588-1590), which Veronese had not begun, in the Doge’s Palace. Major fires in the Doge's Palace in 1574 and 1577 necessitated the wholesale renovation of its decoration; Tintoretto was charged with replacement of Guariento's 1365 Coronation of the Virgin, located behind the dais on which the doge sat. However, the focus of Tintoretto's Paradise composition was to be Christ rather than Mary, with seething crowds of saints and angels purposefully suggesting a Last Judgment, a fit subject for the Great Council chamber.
