Withoos was a member of the Schildersbent in Rome; he was most noted for his still life paintings. His patrons in Italy included Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici. The view is shown from above so that the entire palace and the gardens can be seen over the wall, but it is compressed and composed from more than one viewpoint.
