Description:
|
The Oratory of St. John the Baptist (Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista), a small chapel or prayer hall, was erected ca. 1393. The Salimbeni brothers, Lorenzo and Jacopo, came to Urbino from Rome for the fresco cycle commission, dated 1416. Late Gothic chivalric themes derived from courtly art (e.g. the Très Riches Heures of Jean, Duc de Berry) are mixed with details of contemporary daily life and personalities, all acutely observed. These frescoes have been associated with Gentile da Fabriano, but they seem closer to the work of Ottaviano Nelli, a contemporary Gubbian painter with whom the Salimbeni were undoubtedly in direct contact. The cycle of frescoes were restored in 2012-2013 in time for the 600-year anniversary in 2016. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
