Description:
The statue features Artemis/Diana. The goddess is wearing a short tunic (chiton), a cloak knotted horizontally on the waist with wide puffs and high hunting footwear. The statuary type is known through numerous copies and most likely derives from an original dating to the end of the 4th century BCE. The structure of the face, the puffy cheeks and the rather fat throat date the statue to the Antonine period; in fact, traits such as the fleshy lips and smallish mouth, find parallels in female portraits of the same period. The work was found at Villa d’Este in Tivoli; later acquired by Benedict XIV, the statue was donated to the museum in 1753. (Source: Capitoline Museums [website]; http://en.museicapit olini.org/)
