Description:
The central emblem of a floor mosaic done in fine opus vermiculatum work, found in Pompeii, the House of the Mosaic Doves (Casa delle Colombe a mosaico) (VIII.2.34). In a rocky landscape, a lion holds a panther in his paws. The scene reproduces a Hellenistic painting, although the Roman copyist does not understand perspective and foreshortens the back of the lion until it appears flat.
