Description:
|
This fresco gave the house where it was found (in 1820) its name, the House of Mars and Venus ((Casa di Marte e Venere also known as the Casa delle Nozze di Ercole (House of the Wedding of Hercules), VII.9.47) in Pompeii. Mars raises the blue mantle of Venus, to admire her nudity accentuated by a gold chain. The painting follows the common convention in portraying the male with a darker complexion. Two cupids (amoretti) play with Mars' weapons. (Source: Naples National Archaeological Museum [website]; http://cir.campania. beniculturali.it/mus eoarcheologiconazion ale)
