Description:
The Secret Cabinet (Gabbinete) or Secret Room is the name of the Bourbon Monarchy gave the private rooms in which they held their fairly extensive collection of erotic or sexual items, mostly deriving from excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Limiting viewership and censorship have always been part of the history of the collection. This fresco is from the north wall of the peristyle l between rooms o and p in the Casa di Caecilius Jucundus (V 1, 26) in Pompeii. The woman is wearing the strapless "bra" (strophium); even in the most explicit depictions of sex acts in Roman art, the woman is often wearing the strophium band.
