Description:
|
Part of the 2015 "Pompeii" exhibit which featured over 220 archaeological artifacts, most from the Naples National Archaeological Museum. The exhibit was designed to immerse viewers in settings of every day life in Pompeii, complete with state-of-the-art visual effects and soundscapes. This fresco shows Nike, the winged goddess of victory, presenting a trophy of golden armor to a triumphant warrior. Nike carries a palm branch, a symbol of victory. A helmet is at her feet. The warrior is shown with his shield down, spear in hand. He wears a golden laurel wreath. Nike was born of the giant Pallas and the infernal River Styx. A common attribute of Athena and Zeus, she became recognized as a mediator of success between gods and men. In Rome, she was called Victoria and was considered the protecting goddess of the Senate.
