Description:
|
Formerly in Rome, Villa Medici; entered the Uffizi in 1783. This relief, product of a Neo-Attic workshop, reproduces models based on the friezes on the balustrade (the Nike Parapet) carved with Nikai that surrounded the Temple of Athena Nike on the Athens Acropolis. The temple was begun around 420 BCE to celebrate victory over the Persians. This copy dates from the first half of the second century CE. [Information on museum label.]
