No securely identified work of Buonamico Buffalmacco has survived, but he has been identified as the Master of the Triumph of Death (by Bellosi), the painter of an extensive fresco cycle in the Camposanto (cemetery building) of Pisa, formerly attributed to Francesco Traini. Buffalmacco was well known by his contemporaries Lorenzo Ghiberti and Boccaccio, who mentions him in the Decameron. Ghiberti mentions 'numerous scenes' painted by Buffalmacco in the Camposanto at Pisa. The Triumph of Death on the south wall and the immediately adjoining wall paintings, the Last Judgment with Hell and the Life of the Anchorites (or Thebaid) are now attributed to Buffalmaco. These were damaged and removed after World War II; they are now being put back in their original positions in the building after restoration.
