Description:
|
Pinturicchio's first important independent commission was to fresco the chapel of St. Bernardino, St. Maria d’Aracoeli, Rome, for Niccolò di Manno Bufalini (ca. 1430-1506), a prominent consistorial advocate in the papal court. On the ceiling vaults he painted the four Evangelists (badly deteriorated) and on the walls scenes from the Lives of SS Francis and Bernardino of Siena. On the altar wall is the transfiguration of St. Bernardino between SS Louis of Toulouse and Anthony of Padua, with the resurrected Christ in the mandorla above accompanied by angels.
