Description:
|
The early Renaissance frescoes, carried out by Masolino and Masaccio in the 1420s (and completed by Filippino Lippi ca. 1481-1485), mark a watershed in the history of European art with a new perspectival concept of space. There are 12 separate picture fields on the lateral and back wall (which is divided with a window in the center). Individual fields are separated by Corinthian pilasters and a dentilled molding, a complete novelty at this date. The cycle from the life of Saint Peter was commissioned as patron saint from Pietro Brancacci, the original owner of the chapel. The frescoes were cleaned and restored in 1986-1988.
