Description:
|
According to a medieval (9th century) legend, the ten thousand martyrs were Roman soldiers who, led by Saint Acacius, converted to Christianity and were crucified on Mount Ararat in Armenia by order of the Roman emperor. The depiction of this event was popular in Renaissance art, with works by Durer and Carpaccio among others. (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)
