Description:
|
Chagall stages a paradise overturned by the Fall of Adam and Eve: birds with goat heads fly away, others are upside down, joined by winged fish coming out of the river. The angel in charge of manifesting the divine wrath, at the top in the middle, shows Adam and Eve the path of exile and they move out of the painting on the right, as in all the traditional representations of the scene. They are accompanied by a red rooster, a symbol of vitality and fertility. A mother and child scene at bottom right confirms this optimistic view of the Fall.
