Description:
|
After the Second World War large public commissions arrived, and Chagall turned to monumental works, including mosaics. The composition emphasizes the round shapes, from the wheels of Elijah's chariot, to that of the orb that surrounds the central figure, to the peripheral zodiac. The choice of the subject demonstrates Chagall's syncretism. During his travels in Israel, he visited the ruins of the synagogues of the first centuries CE, decorated with motifs borrowed from Roman iconography, such as the zodiac surrounding the chariot of the sun. Here he substitutes the chariot of Elijah, taken to heaven under the eyes of his disciple Elisha. (Source: Chagall Museum [website]; http://en.musees-nationaux-alpesmaritimes.fr/chagall/)
