Description:
|
In a dream, Jacob the patriarch sees angels moving up and down a ladder. The painting shows two clearly delineated scenes, linked only by the curve of the hill on which Jacob slumbers. To the left, angels are shown dancing like acrobats in a nod to Chagall's love of the circus and showcasing the deep ties that the artist drew between the profane and the sacred. To the right, an angel clad in white, the color of the divine, carries a lit candelabrum, the hopeful light of the divine message.
