Description:
|
This is a replica of a double-manual model inspired by a French 18th century harpsichord by Nicolas and Francois Blanchet. It was made in Paris by the French subsidiary of William Dowd, an American instrument maker, and gifted to the museum, after which Chagall embellished the lid. He chose the scene of Isaac and Rebecca at the Well, but surrounded them with musical villagers, while the musical King David flies to bless their union. The harpsichord is played regularly in concerts at the museum. (Source: Chagall Museum [website]; http://en.musees-nat ionaux-alpesmaritime s.fr/chagall/)
