Part of the exhibition Chagall: Colour and Music (Exhibition, January 28 to June 11, 2017); from a private collection. Later in 1914 Chagall travelled from Berlin to Vitebsk intending a three-month absence from Paris; however, the outbreak of war in August prevented his return and he remained in Russia and Belarus for eight years. The house depicted is a typical Russian village frame house. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
