Description:
|
Chagall lived in Vence, and then Saint-Paul de Vence from 1949 until his death. The baptistery of Vence Cathedral is decorated with a mosaic panel by Chagall. He took the subject "Moses saved from the Nile" to express the joy of this Jewish baptism, a prefiguration of the baptism of Christ. In this sense, the Pharaoh’s daughter who welcomes little Moses then becomes the Church which welcomes a new born child who then becomes a child of God thanks to the Nile holy water. To accentuate this, Chagall added an angel and a rainbow, the celestial bridge between God and humankind. (Source: Vence [official city tourism website]; https://vence.fr/)
