Description:
After arriving in the USA in 1940, Léger created paintings with large swathes of liberated color which intersect the outlines of stylized figures. Léger sought to free color from its traditional confines after seeing the effect of neon signs on the activity in the street on Broadway in New York. Léger returned to France in early 1946, observing that he had "painted in America better than [he] had ever painted before". (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
