Description:
According to Vasari, it was painted by Raphael as a gift in 1505-1506 for Lorenzo di Bartolomeo Nasi, on the occasion of his wedding to Sandra di Matteo Canigiani. On November 17, 1548 Nasi's house was destroyed by an earthquake and the painting broke into seventeen pieces. It was immediately taken to be salvaged, and was hastily put back together, though the seams were quite visible. The painting was restored in 2010, in a process that took six years. The infant John the Baptist gives the Christ child a European Goldfinch, a symbol of his coming sacrifice and crucifixion. (Source: Virtual Uffizi Gallery [website]; https://www.virtualu ffizi.com/)
