Description:
|
Roman copy of a Greek original attributed to Euphranor (second half of the 4th century BCE); purchased in Rome. Euphranor was a Greek sculptor and painter who worked in the Classical tradition. He may have been state artist at Athens in the mid-4th century BCE, perhaps playing a role comparable to that of Pheidias a century earlier. Euphranor was an exact contemporary of Praxiteles; the form known as the "Lycean" Apollo (or Apollo Lyceus) originated with Praxiteles. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
