Description:
Only the head is original; the alabaster bust is a modern restoration. Originally the head would have been part of a full-length statue. The head has been identified as Isis, based on her high headdress decorated with a crescent moon, surmounted by a solar disk flanked by two cobras. The Roman copy, datable to middle of the 2nd century CE is based on a 4th century BCE prototype. The form that Isis took among Greeks and Romans was syncretic and combined her Egyptian traits with Greco-Roman ideas. (Source: Capitoline Museums [website]; http://en.museicapitolini.org/)
