Description:
Pavonazzetto marble also known as Docimaean marble, is a marble originally from Docimium, or modern Iscehisar, Turkey. The name derives from the Italian word for peacock (pavone) and it is characterized by very irregular veins of dark red with bluish and yellowish tints. The yellow eyes of the leopard (panther) are inlaid. The female animal is shown lactating. The lactating panther was an image often associated with Dionysus. From the Farnese Collection.
