Description:
|
The concept of the official portrait was established under Caesar Augustus. When Augustus was crowned in the year 23 BCE, the figure of the princeps became one with the state. Portraits of the emperor, marked by an idealized classicism, his wife and his court were vital propaganda tools for spreading the ruler's image throughout the empire. This veiled head represents the middle-aged Augustus as Supreme Pontiff. Found in the Aula sacra of the theater in Merida.
