Description:
|
Giulio Romano directed local decorative painters and carvers. The room takes its name from the main subject of the frieze: the emblems, coats of arms or mottos of the Gonzaga family. These are represented by visual emblems or "devices" which represent personal characteristics or personal events. There are three inscriptions. "QUOD HUIC DEEST ME TORQUET", "What is missing from him torments me", refers to the ardent passion of Federico for his favorite, Isabella Boschetti. The second, accompanied by the motto: "FIDES / ΟΛΥΜΠΟΣ", Fede / Olimpo ", expresses the concept of fidelity, symbolized by the ashes placed on the altar at the top of Mount Olympus. The red and yellow marble chimney has the inscription "F [edericus] II M [archio] M [antue] V", "Federico II fifth marquis of Mantua".
