Description:
|
The Tornabuoni Chapel is actually the chancel of the church, behind the high altar. Domenico, his brother Davide and their workshop created everything, including the stained glass windows, still in situ and the altarpiece (which has been scattered). Using classical pilasters and entablatures, Ghirlandaio divided the two enormous walls under the wall rib in this Gothic chapel into six horizontally rectangular picture fields, topped with a lunette. To the left is the life of Mary, to the right is the life of St. John Baptist. The vaults contain the four Evangelists. The back wall has Dominican saints and the donors, Giovanni Tornabuoni and his wife Francesca Pitti. The frescoes were restored in 1996. (Source: Web Gallery of Art; http://www.wga.hu/index.html)
